The Governor’s University Research Initiative (GURI), established in 2015, helps Texas public universities recruit top researchers from around the world. The program aims to enhance the reputation of Texas universities and boost statewide economic development.
Type of Incentive:
Matching grants up to $5 million per researcher, paid on a cost-reimbursement basis.
Eligibility:
Texas public universities can apply if they are recruiting "distinguished researchers" such as Nobel Laureates, members of national academies, or those with equivalent recognition.
Key Criteria:
The university must be eligible.
The researcher must qualify as distinguished in fields like science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or medicine.
The researcher cannot be recruited from another Texas public or private university.
The application must be supported by the university's president and governing board.
Preference is given to recruitments likely to enhance Texas' competitiveness.
Application Process:
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and must be submitted through GURI's online portal. An Advisory Board reviews applications and makes recommendations to the Governor’s Office, which makes the final decision.
